Primary Responsibility
As a Scientist I in Product Development at McCormick & Company, you will work under management guidance to complete challenging technical assignments in the field. You will apply your knowledge and experience to tackle assignments creatively, providing technical direction to junior team members and supervising when necessary. This role allows you to progressively establish your work schedule and research plans under general supervision while recommending improvements in practices and procedures. You may also be called upon to offer technical expertise to colleagues and engage with key customers and cross-functional teams to plan and execute product and process development projects from concept to commercialization.
Your primary focus will be on Retort Product Development, ensuring projects are completed within assigned priorities and managing technical risks independently. You will also provide technical direction, informal leadership, and supervision to junior team members and interns, and actively participate as a team member, sharing knowledge and coaching others. Additionally, you’ll adhere to company requirements with a strong emphasis on product quality and safety, reporting any irregularities that may affect food quality and safety.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Culinary, Sensory, Packaging, Sales, Marketing, Procurement, QA, Regulatory, Finance, and Operations, to develop and duplicate products from concept to commercialization.
- Deeply understand ingredient interactions, recipes, and processes to ensure product suitability for manufacture and stability throughout shelf life.
- Interact with suppliers/vendors and participate in vendor approval programs and material selection.
- Provide technical and troubleshooting support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Actively engage in New Product Development (NPD) meetings and deliver projects within agreed timeframes.
- Utilize R&D-related software and systems (e.g., SAP, SAPRD, GATE, INTELEX).
- Identify and implement Comprehensive Continuous Improvement (CCI) and process improvements.
- Prepare product specifications, including ingredient statements, nutritional composition, and labeling requirements.
- Stay updated on new products, flavors, and technologies from suppliers, universities, and other sources.
- Share new technology insights with internal stakeholders and external customers.
- Supervise manufacturing/scale-up trials and lead transitions to business as usual.
- Coach and mentor Product Development Technologists, interns, and technicians.
- Liaise with cross-functional teams in the development of vendor approval programs and material alternatives.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, or Process Engineering.
- Thermal Process and Retort Certification (e.g., Approved Thermal Process Authority) is advantageous.
- 5+ years of relevant product development experience in the food industry.
- Experience in Ready to Eat Meals, Sauces, Pastes, Condiments, Coatings, or Seasonings preferred.
Job Dimension
- Play a key role in executing the Flavour Solutions and Consumer annual business growth strategy, income, and profit targets.
- Have frequent customer contact, delivering professional presentations and fostering customer relationships.
- Engage with vendors and potential vendors, representing and communicating McCormick’s quality and ethical standards.
- Network with broader Global R&D contacts to drive solutions and provide advice/guidance to the local business unit and cross-functional partners.
- Provide informal coaching and mentoring to other R&D team members.
- Impact the R&D team, operations, QA, procurement, Flavor Solutions and Consumer customers, suppliers, Commercial teams, and the global R&D network.
- Have daily interactions with R&D, QA, Regulatory, Operations/Supply Chain, Flavor Solutions and Consumer team, Marketing, and Finance.
- Frequently interact with external customers, vendors/suppliers, and other industry contacts.
